There were rumors upon rumors that Mayor Tim Murphy and Kelly Zizzo were living together when he first moved into his apartment on 3rd and Le Jeune Avenue; it really did not matter since that is a popular option today. One thing was troublesome - Zizzo wanted to be elected as the Republican Precinct Committeeman for the Lockport Township 17th Precinct.
Those who wish to be an elected committeeman must reside within the precinct where they wish to be a committeeman; must get a nominating petition signed by citizens within the candidate’s precinct, and the candidate must attest to the truthfulness of the petition by signing his or her signature before a notary public. Finally, the candidate submits the signed and sworn to petition to the County Clerk who, after scrutinizing the petition, places the candidate’s name on the ballot. That process is not complex; however, it demands honesty. Under the law, it is the elected committeemen who perform many legal functions such as approving election judges or removing them, and casting votes for a party chairman, and registering voters. Frequently the Precinct Committeeman will be a poll watcher during elections to ascertain that honesty prevails during the election. A committeeman must be honest. If a candidate cannot be honest about something as simple as the minimal information required on a nominating petition it certainly raises serious questions about whether or not that person can be trusted at all. It must make one question the character of the liar. If he or she lied about a simple matter how can they be trusted to be honest in big matters? It certainly might make one suspicious in any business dealing with the liar because it becomes impossible to know when the liar is lying or when the liar is being truthful. Zizzo signed her sworn petition before a Notary Public on Nov. 2, 2007. Anonymous callers were crying, “Foul” shortly before the election because they believed that Zizzo was living with Murphy not in the 17th Precinct on East 2nd Street where she swore she was living but rather in the 16th Precinct on Le Jeune Avenue. We don’t know. When evidence came to light that Murphy may not have withheld federal taxes from Zizzo’s salary of $3,676 for working for his political campaign, a certified letter was sent to Zizzo to ask that she voluntarily submit a copy of her withholding form to establish that the taxes had been withheld. That letter was sent to Zizzo at Murphy’s home address, the return receipt was signed by Murphy who accepted the U.S. Mail addressed to Zizzo. If Zizzo does not live at the Le Jeune address why would Murphy accept mail that was not his? If Zizzo does live there with Murphy, a new question arises; was she living with Murphy at the Le Jeune |
